How to Walk in heels

So I was reading the style section of an online paper and it had a huge article about "how to walk in heels" which struck me as odd since I thought all women learned from their mothers how to walk in heels. But as I walked home (not in heels) I noticed other women that were in heels and how they walked and most were doing it wrong. The most common mistake that I saw was that women were sliding their feet instead of going heel-toe. This is really bad because it makes your posture look like crap and makes a terrible sliding noise instead of the alluring clicking of heels. So I thought I would post this little video as a reminders to all women. Just remember, stand up straight, heel-toe and sway (don't swing!) those hips.

Wang Pulls out of Fashion Week

So I was shocked yesterday when I read that Vera Wang was pulling out of New York fashion week, the largest fashion show in the world. She basically said it was too expensive and not worth it in these hard economic times and I think I have to agree with her to an extent. I think it isn't worth it for well known designers because they don't need the exposure. They can have little boutique shows and everyone will know about it and be banging down her office door to come because she is a name. But for people that are just starting out they need the exposure and the press of fashion week to make a splash and get buyers for their line. So I think fashion week still serves a vital purpose and I would hate to see it go away. I would just like to see it get cheaper so that there is a better chance of an unknown getting into the show and getting discovered.

In the Bra Business? Get the Bra Business Card!

I just love the idea of business cards that reflect your personality and profession. That is why I love fashion business cards because for the most part they are like me. Chic, spunky and of course always looking their best :) Check out another one of my favorite fashion business cards below. I think it is just a little bit risque for those that are in the bra business to help up-sell the good stuff.

Canadian Diamonds = Conflict Free

So I think when I get married I want my diamond from Canada. I think this is the only way to ensure that my diamond is more "aboot" than it is blood. By stopping women from getting diamonds from conflict zones we don't fund the terrorism and destruction of human life that occurs there. Our dollars vote for that murder when we by those diamonds and I think it is high time we stop. Let's support Canadian diamonds and make sure that our money is going to a friendly neighbor to the north and not a rebel army that is slaughtering children.

Kill your Heels - Dress Up Flats

I for one am all behind the recent trend of dress up flats. I really hate heels and frankly I hate the way my toes get squished for 8 hours a day when I wear them. So seeing flats making a comeback and even cutting into the heels marketshare is really exciting for me. I think flats say a lot of things about women's fashion that are really positive. For one it says that we don't need heels to look good (and make our butts look good) to get ahead in life, we can dress with what makes us comfortable and what works best for us and still be successful. It also says that we don't need to suffer to be stylish. Fashion is never about suffering, that was just the men in the world that created that, it is about art and art can be on a flat shoe just as easily as on a heel. So I say bravo to your flats revolutionaries out there and I say we keep fighting this until the heel becomes a thing of the past that we joke about like leggings at an 80s halloween party. "Death to heels!"

Shemagh Scarves

Shemagh Scarves are getting hot these days especially now that the weather is starting to cool off. I think these have roots in the middle east and are worn as a great way to accessorize any little ensemble. I haven't got one yet, mostly because I think they are over priced, but I think I might ask for one for christmas since that is just around the corner. Also I think these scarves are a perfect example of how the world is quickly becoming more inter-connected and globalized as fashion can spread from one area to the next in the blink of an eye.

Bad Fashion

WOW. TMZ has come out with a lot of very interesting photos today with some of the worst in the fashion world. I know that this might be considered avante garde, but to me it just looks like crap.

Ombre Coat Shout Out

Just a quick shout-out to the Ombre Coat! It has everything I am loving about jackets this winter, simple design with a sharp/loose on the body cut and hidden pockets for lots of stuff like blackberrys and iphones. Also I love the throw back with the plaid and big buttons, it's very JackieO and very fitting for the recently passed presidential season. I think is a great coat that you could wear out to bars and drinks or just for getting lunch on a brisk afternoon. Well done!

Calendar Beauty for the Ages

In this world of extremely high fashion standards it is always interesting to look to the past to see what was considered sexy at the time and what was not. What is really amazing is that from time to time and culture to culture there is for sure not one single thing that is always a constant. Beauty is always in the eyes of the society and in a constant of flux and change. That is what is amazing because we have the power to make sure that women aren't starving themselves to be what we consider beautiful right now. I think we have a duty to ourselves to change what is beautiful now to save the lives of those that are suffering. Just take a look at this calendar and see how beauty through time has been different and will continue to change long after we are dead. It should humble you into seeing your vanity and wanting to change the insane standards we have created these days.

Geometric Jewelery

I am really loving the jewelery from Designer Kara Ross! It is got the perfect balance of gold and silver with simple and sharp geometric shapes that really give it a simple beauty. I can see why fashion icon stars like Anne Hathaway are attracted to jewelery like this, it says that I love jewelery but that I don't need to flaunt it.

Inauguration Fashion

There is no question that Michelle Obama is fashionable, maybe not as much as Jackie O or even Cindy McCain, but still a lot. So that leaves the question as to what she is going to be wearing on Inauguration day as all the eyes of the world will be on her. She could go with what Laura Bush wore, be conservative and simple which really means don't stand out. However, I don't think that Michelle is going to do that. I think that she has a flare about her that is going to bring a lot of power and intensity to the office of the First Lady. I want to to take that passion and express it with her clothes. That is how she can show that she is going to do something different with this position that her predecessor.

Thanksgiving Colors

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and it is time to talk about fall colors. What fall colors? Well how about black and dark brown? Not the colors your were expecting I imagine. Well I am really talking about those colors that are going to hide more than they show. It's no secret that everyone packs on a few pounds at the holidays, but it doesn't mean we have to show it off in a bright orange or yellow sweater dress (which I hate btw). Instead use some baggy clothing like the ones above or try a dark brown sweater. You will still look festive without getting called the thanksgiving turkey.

don't be like me!

Clutch Vs the Bag

So when do you use a clutch or take the full on bag? It's actually very simple and of course it has to match with what you are wearing. Basically clutches are for those short trips. Outings with the girls, dinner with the hubby and so on. You want to make sure that it matches with your outfit because you are holding it close and it will reflect what you wear. Usually clutch events are at night. When you take the big purse is when you are just going to grab lunch and throwing on some stuff to do some shopping. It's the purse that you need with you all day because you might need something from the big bag. Of course these rules can be bent and even broken, but if you are ever wondering which fits a situation check the style of your dress and if it is haut then you might want to go with clutch.

Independent Designer T-shirts = Cheaper Fashion

So it's no joke that times are hard these days and that means one of the first things to go is fashion. Since clothes are so expensive it is something that most people cut back on immediately. However, instead of cutting back, explore new options like this shirt below from an independent designer. You get a much cheaper shirt that is still trendy and on the cutting edge. I think it is a great way to look great for less in these hard times.

Fall Coats

It's definitely getting colder and that means that it is time for fall coats! I really like this Michael Kors coat above because it has a classic New England feel with a nice little touch of fur to keep it young and classy. This is a great coat that can be worn around the city or just in the morning to work when it is cold. Basically it goes casual as well as formal. I can't wait to see all the coats that are available this season!

Purple Is This Season Color

Purple has waited a long time to be back on top and now it is! I love purple, it is the color of royalty and of designer chic. But most importantly it has the sheen of a light color and the hiding nature of a dark color. It is the perfect chameleon to go with any occasion at any time of day. So stock up on purple before you turn purple looking for more purple! And of course a post about this wouldn't be complete without Violet turning Violet!

Cheaper Jeans - The Hurley

Usually I don't try to choose a jeans company over any other, but I really like the black skinny jeans that Hurley has been producing. They have the same cut as citizen or tru life but are about half the price. I mean you can walk away with a pair of these for like $50 bucks. That means you can get two pairs and still have some money for a small lunch. You'll need a small lunch to fit into these jeans. And just to show my unbiased nature I am not going to link you to the jeans, you'll just have to find them yourself :)

Women's Halloween Costumes - Ugh

It seems every Halloween, we women decide to turn back the clock of equality, rights, and justice for our sex and dress up in insane outfits like the one above and become play things for the men at clubs and bars. It is a sad objectification of women that we seem to be OK with at least 2-3 times a year (new years and mardi gras seem to be other key times). Sometimes I wonder if most women actually care about all those that have suffered to give them the rights and freedoms they have today. I feel like many women just want to pretend that they care and that on key days like Halloween they feel they are allowed to let loose and they do with reckless abandonment. I know this might be hearsay for many women in the world, but maybe we should try some costumes that are a little less sexy and a little more respectful of our station in life? That probably won't work, but at least it was worth a shot.

Pumkpins are beautiful too!

When buying beauty product you often hear about the benefits of stuff like cucumber, melons, and of course the classic aloe. But you never hear about the added benefits of pumpkins in make-up and health care products. That is why I think this being the season of pumpkins it might be the right time to talk about pumpkin beauty products. Check out one of my favorites below.

These pumpkin soaps are made with a traditional process that really allows you to smell like the season. Of course they are way tooo expensive for a normal purchase, but they might make a nice gift for grandma or mom.

Christmas Card

Well unlike most people I like to get my holiday work done earlier to make sure that I have everything covered well in advance of the actual Christmas Day. That said I don't wait until November 25th like some people to get my holiday cards together and send out. Of course I am not going to send them to later, but it takes time to address and stamp all of these bad boys so I have already ordered the cards that I want and I am going to be ready for the holidays before October is over this year. See below for my holiday card for 2008.

The Fall Boots are In!

So the fall season of boots are in and I think that black leather (shiny) is the new gold standard for all those women that want to get out there with their skirts in the cold fall weather. Here is a pair of boots that i absolutely will be buying this season when I get the money for it...

please god make sure the UGG boots go away this season...

The Best Fashionable Lamps

So sometimes I forget that fashion is a part of our homes as much as it is apart of our bodies. That is why I love seeing things like this that talk about some of the amazing advances in design that some people have been able to bring to the world of home design. Personally I would get the Titanic Lamp...

Beauty Software Hits the Mainstream

Well an Israel software development firm has started to bring a software platform to the mainstream that basically allows you to see what you would look like if your face conformed to the standard of beauty that scientists have come up with over the years. I am not very happy about this because for one it believes that there is only one standard of beauty and two it makes people yearn for unattainable goals and ideas of personal beauty. Each person needs to be happy and love the person that they are now, plastic surgery and injections will not repair the insecurities in your mind and soul and will only make a person feel like more a fake. Own who you are and demand that fashion be the expression of your inner self. Don't use cheap tricks and ideas to cover up what clay you've been given, work with it and celebrate it!

Culver City

Since every where else in LA seems to be over done I guess it was about time that they redid Culver City so that it is now the center of attention to the IT crowd in LA. Now little clubs and restaurants are popping up everywhere to serve the fashion people and the movie people that LA seems to teem with. One side of me thinks this is great because I love urban development, turning nothing into something. But the other part of me and admittedly the more powerful of my feelings hates to see the character of Culver City get absorbed in the larger beast that is greater LA. It is just another little town that has now been swallowed by the encroaching sands of the glitz and glamor desert.

Campaign Make-up

One thing that is really amazing about politics is that it is about policy, but it is also about image. The president candidates have to look presidential, which goes from their suit to their face. Yes most men don't wear make-up but you can bet your bottom dollar that Obama and McCain are wearing make-up. The difference is the type of message each is trying to send with the make-up. For McCain, the make-up is about showing LIFE, he needs to seem young, viral and ready for anything that comes at him. Look below, would you think he is in his 70s or maybe just late 50s? That is the power of make-up for McCain

Obama is a little different. He is young, so he needs to look stately and ready for action. That means no greasy spots on the forward like he feels like he has pressure on him, more about a matte feel to his entire face. Also, even though he is younger they need to keep just a HINT of gray in his hair, just enough to look experienced but not enough to make him seem like he is aging. He needs to look like he has the energy to change the world.

I personally like Obama's make-up just a bit more because it is less about concealing and more about bringing out his features.

Breast Cancer Postage Support

Just in case you didn't know, this month is Breast Cancer Awareness month were we all do what we can to support research and awareness generation for Breast Cancer. I think that this is a great cause because honestly this illness can infect men and women alike (even though it is more common in women). That is why I am in support of this breast cancer postage that helps drive awareness and all the proceeds go to fighting the disease. Check out some of the cool designs below.

Celeb Tattoos

I haven't gotten any ink (yet) but I do think about it all the time. I was checking out instyle and I really like the section they have on celebrity tattoos (http://www.instyle.com/instyle/package/general/photos/0,,20214895_20226051,00.html?cid=newsletter-parties). I think the theme that most celebrities go with is small, concealable and foreign tattoos. I dig that trend so that is what I will do if I ever get around to getting my own...

Death of the Watch?

As cellphones become more fashionable and functional, do we never need a watch anymore? All of the features that a watch had was easily incorporated into the cellphone years ago and now the watch has become nothing more than a fashion statement. So it makes me wonder when will it stop being a fashion statement and start becoming a heavy chunk of metal that you wear on your wrist. I haven’t worn a watch in at least 4 years and I doubt that I ever will again. I think that is pretty much true for everyone in my generations and I think that we are only a few years away for the watch to go the way of the class ring and French cut shirt.

Cute Geek Wedding Rings

I admit that i would never wear these, but these are pretty cute wedding ring ideas for those men and women of the world that fashion themselves experts of the computing world (or they just like computers). One is the female and the other is the male end of the internet cord you use for high-speed interenet connections. Very clever indeed, but I don't know if anyone would actually tie the knot with those two rings...

Fashionable Flat Ware and Kitchen Apron Wear

Well it's not quite silverware, but it might as well be. It is time to take the fashion from the clothes to the kitchen with some hot new tableware and dishes. I think this is a great way to make sure that fashion enters every facet of your life and not just the clothes you wear. Check out this fashionable set of artistic plates of the fashionable apron below. Both are great additions to your kitchen to make you hot and haute at the same time.

Rocker Chicks

Rihanna is doing it, Audrina (the Hills) is doing it, and so is everyone else. I think it is time to adopt the Rocker chick style. What i really like about this style that is different from the past rocker chick styles is that it is still feminine and curvy, it just has a lot more black and leather. To me, rocker chicks always looks like boys with baggy clothes and greasy hair. But now they are wearing tight black jeans and fitted leather jackets that define them as strong and amazing compared to their male frumpy counterparts. I think the rebirth of rocker chick is going to spread through the nation and black is going to become the color that blankets the country this country, not the white of snow.

Best Places for wedding photos

If you are trying to do an entire wedding and all the planning that goes around it the last thing you want to be thinking about is the backdrop of your after-wedding photos. Of course they are going to be outside, but where? Well if you're in the DC area, I think some of the great places within the national mall can create a historic and fun backdrop for most of your photos. Why not try the Lincoln memorial, or maybe the reflection pod at the national monument? These are some great places to take your shots.

For those that don't live in the DC area just try something outdoors and with trees (to block other people and cars). And for god sakes be CASUAL! The more casual you look in your photos the more happy you will look and that is the most important thing for the day after a wedding

Virtual Mirrors

Using a flat panel TV, camera and some really cool software the Fraunhofer Institute has been able to create a mirror that allows a person to see what clothes look like on them without even having to change. Here is how it works:

"The set up consists of a flat panel display with touch screen, a camera mounted above it and lighting to evenly illuminate users. They stand in front of the display wearing a green T-shirt, the camera captures their image and then a software algorithm replaces the green with whatever style the users choose. That includes different colors, logos and textures."

(read more here:http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/150514/virtual_mirror_makes_trying_on_clothes_a_snap.html )

What is great about this is I can try on a lot more clothes in the morning than my usual 1-2 outfits. What would be even cooler is if it had recommendations based on weather and other things going on in the world so that it could pre-pick outfits for me that would work really well for the day. Oh well, we can have that later one...

Car Challenge on Project Runway

I really love the car challenge for Project Runway because I constantly sit in my car and wonder what kind of clothes I could make out of it if I had the design eye that these people have. I don't of course so that is why I critique instead of design :) . Anyway, I really love what came out of that challenge in season 5 because they are much more fashion forward than they have been in the past. This year they have been much more edgy and exciting which is always awesome. I honestly don't see anyone this time that is as strong as Christian was last season so it is anyone's game at this point.

Whiten Teeth - Safely

Whitening your teeth doesn't have to be a procedure that you need to go the hospital for, it can be done at home with some simple household items that are safe for your environment and most importantly safe for your body. Try this one:

mix on small plate:
1 tsp baking soda
dash of salt
then add a few drops of white vinegar, which will foam. Brush onto your teeth, then brush with toothpaste normally once finished.

It's easy, you probably have all the ingredients at home and most of all it is safe. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Hathaway is Chic

Just look at this side-by-side comparison of Anne Hathaway and a runway model wearing the latest trend. Notice anything? Anne is pulling off the dress just as well as the model! That is pretty impressive for someone that is also an actress and college grad. I have noticed a lot of this lately, that Anne has been wearing more and more Chic designer clothing and just looking incredible in it. Usually I don't comment on celebrity gossip, but if this is her way of getting over her cheater of an EX then I am impressed. Instead of hiding from the world she has decided to spread her wings and show him, and all the other men out there, what they are missing by not being with this haute woman (that has two meanings for those that are a little slower). Anyway, Anne keep it up! We are all amazed and happy to see you represent fashion for the Hollywood scene - you do it very well!

BRush your Hair!

It may seem absurd to brush your hair 100 times a night, but if you can do it! All those tangles pulled out of your hair brings a natural luster to it that you just can't get with any type of beauty treatment. Also the body of the hair becomes much nicer and if you've got a great cut then it will really show off your face more and more. I brush my hair about 25 times each night because that is all that I can stand, but trust me, I wish I did it more. The more the better. Oh, and do yourself a favor, don't use a walmart brush or anything like that. Go to a Salon and get a good brush, it will last a long time and it will be so much nicer going through your hair than something that was recycled from plastic grocery bags.

My Dad's Apron

I was visiting my parents last night and in case I had forgotten that football season is coming up my dad was able to remind me (thanks dad)! I seriously think that he get more excited about fantasy football with his friends than he would he he won the lotto. He has been playing with the same group of lunk heads from his office for like five years and they all get into it and act like total morons. One time I had the privilege of being home for a game an enduring the friends and my dad at the height of their obsession. THat said, I noticed that while my dad was cooking he didn't have a good apron, so since his birthday is coming up I thought this would be an awesome apron for him to wear to show off to his friends.

Gwen wins VMA transformation award

Gwen Stefani has to be considered one of the greatest music + fashion success of all time. I mean just look at this image alone from the outfits that she wore to successive MTV VMAs.

In the first frame she is just another punk rocker that doesn't care about her dress or fashion statement. In the second frame Gwen does a complete 180 degree turn and becomes a 1950s pinup in this BEAUTIFUL Louie dress and with hair that would make any girl give up at least three toes to have. I think we could say that this dress at the 06 VMAs was Gwen's birth into fashion. But no, she doesn't stop there. Then she launches her own clothing line and instead of it being some tacky K-Mart crap (Sarah Jessica Parker) it is high fashion and she even wears it! At the 07 VMAs there is Gwen looking stunning in a dress off her own line and really strutting her stuff like she owns the carpet. I love it because she is fully behind her line, it's not just a side project to her, it's part of her life. That is awesome and that was the complete circle of her becoming a fashion diva.

I think we can all agree that this year's VMA is going to be something from her own line again and it is going to be HOT. Gwen you are one of the best/most real fashion icon that music has ever produced. We love to watch, thanks!

Floral is Fresh

The boys over at InStyle for sure have their finger on the pulse right now as floral prints do seem to be the next big hot trend right now. What I love about floral prints is that they are so colorful that you can't help but smile. I don't think I have ever seen a sad person in floral, have you? Anyway, the weather is nice and it is a perfect time to get that rose print dress out and go get some brunch! I hear the raspberry croquets are delicious :)

Penelope Cruz - Classy and Feminine with STYLE!

I was reading InStyle today and I had to steal this image of Penelope Cruz because she is just really one of the best dress celebrities out there for me. I don't know if it because she is European or because she just seems to have this cool relaxed attitude but she just exudes style, class and a feminine mystic that can't be topped. Just look at this capture of Cruz out and about. She isn't at a red carpet event, or a movie release she is just walking the streets and happened to be captured by an adoring photographer. Her sweater is simple and elegant and flows perfectly into the black and white print skirt that hugs the hips perfectly and ends just above her ankles to show off her graceful moves in those 4 in pumps. I defy you to find another celebrity that can look as casual and put together on a moment's notice like Cruz is in this picture. I mean even the smile! Suffice to say if I could be a celeb I would be here. Penelope, let's have lunch and trade some style tips cause I need some of what you've got.
